In Commemoration of Sarah and Ali…

“Love is a house that even death cannot knock down.” David Kessler

In the two cases I want to talk, about how love of the people who passed away was involved in what they did. And how love is still involved in the projects family and friends established to commemorate them.

The eclectic Sarah White,’ who was Arts Advisor and Museum Director of the Bait Al Zubair Museum, was not only a leading member of the arts and culture group in Oman. She was also a talented artist and inspired a lot of people. As a tribute to her undying spirit “Gallery Sarah,” a new gallery which adjoins the Bait Al Zubair Museum was officially opened on the 30th of October. Till the 31th of December a unique selection of Omani paintings, artworks and photographs and Sarah’s own collection of paintings are on display.

In conjunction with the gallery opening, a fully functional e-commerce website has been launched which enables artists and photographers to sell their work locally and internationally. The online e-commerce website; www.gallerysarah.com, will be able to deliver art pieces in Oman, within the Middle East as well as internationally, further enhancing the Sultanate’s visibility on the global art scene. This gallery was a dream for Sarah.

Ali Mehdi,” a prolific writer, blogger and a columnist with The Week and other publications on Oman and who sadly passed away on the 21st of June 2008 at the young age of 29, was passionate about writing. “He strongly believed in the power of the pen to make a difference in the world.”

After five years his dream is not forgotten. On the 6th of November 2013, the Ali Mehdi Young Writer’s Competition was launched. Both citizens and residents of Oman between the age of 16 and 23 years are invited to take part in the competition and to take the opportunity to present their work for a wide audience. The contest is open to stories of any style and on any subject, but they must not be longer than 3,000 words. Till October 2014 they can register on www.pennedthoughts.com. The website will also provide updates on the contest.
