Why are women so fascinated by handbags? Beside the fact that the bag is a survival kit for daily life, a handbag is an investment in their image. The most obvious attribute is a striking design.
Handicraft is very well organized in Oman and also in Salalah. But ‘Asma Ali,’ who lives in Salalah, wants to translate old handicraft in a modern fashion design, a design that appeal on the needs of the women in Oman and abroad. With the help of the Chamber of Commerce, she made her project clear for women in Salalah. At a meeting last year, she offered a free training in designing and making bags and shoes. Fifteen women from different levels in the society learned from the 28th of October 2014 till the end of this month how to design and make handbags. In a next phase the designing and making of shoes will follow. Mohammed, Egyptian and for many years specialized in making bags and shoes for women, guided the participants through the different stages of the making. Asma, who followed before a project with Sanad– a self employment program, helped the women in designing and using the stitching machines. More than thirty bags were created. The models are made by hand or by machine in synthetic or natural materials. The materials come from Egypt and Italy. Some of the designs and the quality in the making of the training models surprises. In April/May, Asma hopes to showcase handbags on the market. But in-between a lot has to be done. Now she financed the training herself. In the meanwhile she is looking for business partners. The name of her company ‘Flowers light’ (di al-zuhur) is symbolic in two ways. Flowers needs light to grow. With offering a free training, the participants can have the opportunity to learn how to design and how to make the handbags. In a second phase the designing and making of shoes will follow. The training can help to boost their self-esteem and in the nearby future to improve their income. Most important is that the women who follow the training make qualitative and fashionable handbags. Asma dreams to have bags on the market made in Oman by Omani women. She believes very strong in the creativity of the women.
